A few weeks back, there was boxing match that had the entire Data-Shield office on the edge of our collective seats.

Two highly regarded pugilists, in a bruising match-up that went the distance while the fans shouted encouragement. But this fight wasn’t in Saudi Arabia or televised to a 100 million fans across the world. The venue; Chester Racecourse, known as the Roodee, and the fighters, Shaun “Sweet shot” Day versus Matthew, “The Wolfman” Spencer. Although we couldn’t justify flying to Riyad for Joshua v Ruiz (2) – Shaun, a family friend of our co-founder Dave Carr, asked if we could sponsor him in a local white-collar boxing event to raise money for Cancer Research.

A bigger fight

For the uninitiated, White Collar Boxing started in 1988 when a doctor and an attorney trained for a few weeks before boxing each other at a black-tie event in New York. Today, Ultra White Collar Boxing (UWCB) is the most established organisation of its kind in the country, running over 1000 events since 2009. UWCB is Cancer Research UK’s biggest fundraisers in the UK raising over £20 Million.

The 3-round fight was a wonderful spectacle with Shaun winning the first, taking a tumble in the second while trading blow for blow with “The Wolfman” in the third. The judge’s decision was a draw, which the crowd cheered in agreement. Data-Shield sponsored Shaun, helping his total to hit the £350 target. Although only a small amount in the scheme of things, the Chester chapter of UWCB has raised over £183,000 alone. We would like to help keep this growing, so we are encouraging other businesses across our region to take part in any way they can.
